Product Description

Seawater Resistant CuNi 70/30 Eccentric Reducer Fittings ASME B16.9 Desalination

1.Product Description

The Copper Nickel Reducer Fitting is a standard pipe component designed for diameter transition. Its base material is copper-nickel corrosion-resistant alloy, with main grades including 90/10 type (UNS C70600, BFe10-1-1) and 70/30 type (UNS C71500, B30). The product is formed by hot forging followed by solution heat treatment to obtain a uniform microstructure and stable corrosion resistance. The internal bore features a precision tapered transition, with the length-to-diameter ratio of the reducing section hydraulically optimized to minimize local flow resistance. Based on the geometric relationship of the centerlines at both ends, the fitting is classified into Concentric type (coincident centerlines) and Eccentric type (parallel but offset centerlines). The concentric type is primarily used in vertical risers, column nozzles, or pump suction/discharge positions requiring high alignment accuracy; the eccentric type is suitable for horizontal pipelines, maintaining a consistent bottom elevation to facilitate liquid drainage or pigging upon system shutdown. The products are manufactured and inspected in accordance with ASME B16.9, DIN 86089, and GB/T 12459, with end connections available in butt-weld, socket-weld, threaded, and flanged types, broadly accommodating various field installation conditions.

2.Product Applications

Owing to the excellent tolerance of copper-nickel alloys to seawater, saline solutions, and various corrosive chemical media, the product finds extensive application in the following civil and industrial sectors:

  • Ocean shipping and offshore resource development equipment – including seawater cooling systems, fire-water networks, ballast water treatment lines, and process water piping aboard large container vessels, bulk carriers, oil tankers, LNG carriers, and offshore oil/gas production facilities.

  • Desalination treatment projects – applied in intake headers, pre-treatment units, energy-recovery device connections, and brine discharge lines for reverse-osmosis, multi-stage flash, and low-temperature multi-effect desalination processes.

  • Power generation facilities – providing diameter-transition connections for circulating cooling water systems, auxiliary industrial water systems, and condenser cleaning piping at coastal coal-fired stations, nuclear plants, and combined-cycle gas-turbine power stations.

  • Petroleum refining and chemical process units – used for heat-exchanger piping, air-cooler inlet/outlet connections, and transfer lines for sour water, caustic solutions, and other corrosive media in atmospheric/vacuum distillation, fluid catalytic cracking, and hydrotreating units.

  • Municipal water supply/drainage and district energy systems – serving as diameter-transition nodes in urban water distribution networks, between treatment units in wastewater plants, and in district cooling/heating networks.

  • Industrial and commercial refrigeration/air-conditioning – applied in circulating water lines for large chiller units, cooling towers, ice-storage systems, and industrial refrigeration stations.

3 · Product Advantages

  • Outstanding chloride corrosion resistance – copper-nickel alloys exhibit very low general corrosion rates in chloride-bearing media, with minimal susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion; even in stagnant or low-velocity seawater, the surface protective film remains intact.

  • Strong erosion and abrasion resistance – the material combines adequate hardness with good toughness, capable of withstanding continuous impact from sand-bearing seawater or fluids containing solid particles, with minimal grooving or wall thinning over extended service.

  • Natural anti-biofouling – continuous release of copper ions at wetted interfaces effectively deters aquatic fouling organisms such as barnacles, mussels, and algae, extending cleaning intervals and maintaining design flow capacity.

  • Broad welding process adaptability – compatible with TIG, MIG, and manual arc welding; no preheating required before welding, no post-weld heat treatment; grain growth in the heat-affected zone is controllable, and weld corrosion resistance is essentially equivalent to the parent metal.

  • Good thermal expansion compatibility – the linear expansion coefficient of this alloy is close to that of commonly used carbon steel and low-alloy steel pipes, resulting in moderate thermal stresses at joints during temperature cycling, which benefits the fatigue life of welded connections.

  • Excellent lifecycle economy – compared with ordinary carbon steel and galvanized fittings, copper-nickel alloy fittings offer several times longer service life under identical corrosive conditions; despite higher initial procurement costs, overall operating costs are lower when considering replacement frequency, downtime losses, and maintenance expenses.
